About

Proactive Child Care

It's okay to not be okay. It's okay to ask for help. It's also totally okay to be okay and want to have a space to explore rewarding and uplifting experiences, too. Therapy services are intended to be a resource for any person, regardless if things are going well or not. Sometimes the messages we receive from our environment or other people, however, misconstrue that concept.

Proactive Child Care recognizes that regulation, coping, and interaction styles and patterns develop throughout our lifespan, which is why childhood is an effective time for therapy and working with the whole family is invaluable to fostering a child's growth. So, let's nourish your child's growth and be proactive, together.

Located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and providing telehealth services across California, Proactive Child Care was founded by Dr. Rachel Kavanaugh ("Dr. K") in an effort to help children and caregivers learn and foster skills to support their emotional and behavioral growth before milestones or challenges reach a level that become too overwhelming, problematic, or difficult to manage.

Rachel Kavanaugh, PsyD ("Dr. K")

Hi, I'm Rachel Kavanaugh (she/her). I'm a California Licensed Psychologist (PSY30499) with nearly two decades of experience in the field of psychology providing psychotherapy, school counseling, psychological assessments, clinical supervision, consultation, and related services to children, adolescents, and families. I'm here for you as a therapist, support, and resource before things become too challenging, impairing, or overwhelming for you or your child.

A child's growth is stronger and more widespread when intervention and change happens in naturalistic settings. This is why I provide in-home and telehealth services in my private practice, am a PCIT-International certified therapist, and work as the School Counselor at an independent school in the San Fernando Valley.

I value everyone's unique strengths and needs in order to provide services that are both individualized and supported by research. I integrate science-based therapies (e.g., Parent-Child Interaction Therapy or Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) with a playful, strengths-based, and neuro-affirming approach. Importantly, caregivers are the experts of their child and I utilize their input and active participation whenever working with children or adolescents. I aim to work alongside caregiver's to nurture their child's self-regulation, resilience, and coping abilities. Click here to learn more about my services.

Background & Experience

Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, I completed my bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and earned a Combined Clinical-School Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) from Yeshiva University's Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology & Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City before making my way back to the west coast. I completed my pre- and post-doctoral training at The Help Group in Sherman Oaks. My graduate school and training sites are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). I have worked in a variety of settings, including schools, community-based mental health agencies, private practices, and psychological assessment centers and have offered services as a psychologist as well as a supervisor to pre- and post-doctoral students.

I specialize in working with children and adolescents. This includes, but is not limited to, individuals experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges, attentional and executive functioning difficulties, as well as related neurodevelopmental (e.g., Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder), anxiety (e.g., Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety, Social Anxiety), and mood (e.g., Adjustment Disorder, Depression) symptoms and ICD-10/DSM-5 disorders.
